It’s all worth it for the personal breakthrough

Posted on | May 31, 2010 | 12 Comments

Life can be like the Karate Kid movie.

(Come on, you know your life’s like a cheesy 80’s Hollywood blockbuster…)

Ever felt like Daniel-san, when some days (weeks or months?) are:

Wax on, wax off.

Paint the fence.

Sand the floor.

Freak’n boring. Tiring. Hurting your shoulder. And they’re the good days.

Sure, Mr Miyagi could have told Daniel the point of all this excessive, glorified housework at the start.

Apart from not making very good drama, it’s because Daniel is trained in the life lessons of perfecting the basics, habituated actions and persistence.

Life doesn’t always (if ever) “explain” stuff to you at the beginning. Kinda frustrating…

But when that one thing clicks, it makes all the waxing on and off worth it for the personal breakthrough.

A personal breakthrough is when minor, or major, moments of revelations hit you like a tonne of bricks and you think:

Oh my god, I get it now…

I can’t believe I’ve been doing that (behaving like that/thinking like that)…

That makes total sense for me in my life…

It has been 4 and a half months for me, since taking the leap and leaving my full-time job to explore my true potential. Nothing could have prepared me fully for this.

It’s been an amazing journey. It is an amazing journey.

This sort of, reverse-engineering of thinking that has been drilled into me for almost 30 years… From school, university to employment…

Awakening my entrepreneurial spirit and developing my entrepreneurial mind have brought many a personal breakthrough for me.

But definitely not without – what I’ve learned to call – growing pains… The frustration, doubt, fear…

And, at times (well, let’s be honest, many times), lack of clarity in my vision and purpose.

I promise you this:

I wouldn’t change a thing.

The stuff I’m learning now isn’t only mind-blowing, but every personal breakthrough after personal breakthrough is making me more alive.

I used to feel like I was carrying a corpse around with me. Every day, the heavy, lifeless weight of my dying soul was destroying me. Dramatic? Put it this way, I never got to the point where I wanted to take my life… But I got to the point where I understood why people do.

That was a clear sign I needed to get out of my situation.

But, even in those moments of despair, I found my own personal breakthrough.

Yes, and even those moments, I wouldn’t change.

Because they were life lessons I had to learn. Kinda Daniel-san style.

But without the funky Japanese bandana around my head. That crane kick would have been cool to learn too…

(How long does it take to catch a fly with chopsticks???)

I wouldn’t be where I am today without my own Mr Miyagis.

A BIG THANKS to my coach, Ben Harvey, Cham Tang and the crew at Authentic Education for being a major part of my personal breakthrough smashings this year. Also, a HUGE THANKS to my coach, and friend, Rob Mason of Inspire Yourself.

What about you? Have you experienced a personal breakthrough lately? Maybe a few, or heaps of them? When did you get your first massive personal breakthrough that changed your life forever?

Hi Lina – a major breakthrough for me was about 12 or so years ago when I was involved with a network marketing company. Their teachings taught me that I am 100 percent, totally responsible for me. I can’t blame my family, friends, the government, local council, interest rates or the weather. I am responsible for my health, wealth and happiness. Over the years, I’ve come to realise that the easy option is to blame something or someone else – and that’s what most people do. But you’ll never reach your full potential by taking that route. I’ve lived by this rule ever since and I’ve experienced many other personal breakthroughs as a result.

When I walked on fire for the 3rd time and got little hot spots on my feet and realized you have to be 100% committed EVERYTIME, you can’t fake it. You have to really believe, have faith, trust, know yourself and plunge in. There is no half life. But a lot of people are living a shadow of their potential. Sometimes we cruise, we are not perfectly present, in the moment or taking notice and being fully aware; that’s for sleeping! When you’re awake you have to be totally alive and committed to what you envisage for yourself. And then life is totally awesome…

    Hi Lina,

I have tried my hand at many things, been a slave to the wage working jobs that I hated. Whether it was fate, luck, or my amazing charm that got me here “working” beside my friend and mentor Sean, I am not sure (most likely the charm)

I have fun, learn something new, get inspired by those around me and go home smiling every single day.

My breakthrough was discovering my passion and being able to live and breathe it every day. I love to teach and I have some truly amazing students.

    Hi Lina,

I’m very similar to Jan, in that my breakthrough came when someone told me I was responsible for everything in my life. Some further words from the great entrepreneur Tim Ferriss also resonated with me. Tim wrote that it was difficult being normal – as there’s so much competition. Being extraordinary is easier.

    Hi Lina,

My personal breakthrough came about 2.5 years ago when, after being forced to take a good look at my (our) financial situation, I decided to take control of not only my finances but my overall direction in life. This lead me on the journey I’m on now. I’ve learnt more in the last 2.5 years than I have over the past 15 and although it’s been a tough journey with lots of highs and lows, I reckon I’m onto a good thing and things can only get better.

    Hi Lina,

While I still consider myself as having a lot to learn and experience. I am grateful for the less than desirable factors in my life that have formed the catalyst inside for personal change.

As David mentioned above, following the norm has been, well ‘normal’ for me for a long-time. However, while I still have fear stepping out of my comfort zone ever now and then, I know that each experience will lead onto the breakthrough that I am looking for.

    Hi Lina,
A major breakthough for me was about 10 years ago when I decided to quit my job and Travel around Australia by myself.

Apart from seeing the great sights that this great country of ours offers, I also worked here and there, played some footy, and made heaps of friends.
I really did learn so much about life from my time travelling. I learnt that I had to start spending more time on what I wanted in life, rather than what others want from me.

Since then I have earnt my private Pilots license, doubled my income, and have made significant inroads with investing, mindset and business….. Oh and I met my beautiful fiance.(better not forget that bit);-). So lots to be grateful for.

I still have much more to learn and achieve, but I know I am on the right path, and am surrounding myself with the right people to help achieve my dreams.

There have been many personal breakthroughs in my life, some big, some small. All too often, I believe that we don’t recognise their significance until much later. I am learning more and more to live with a conscious awareness.
One particular health issue that I had about 6 years ago comes to mind as being a major turning point. I felt very out of control at the time. It taught me that I needed to be responsible for my own life; that I create my own reality; and the importance of living in the moment.
Thank you Lina for a very inspiring read!
