Have you ever asked, “What is my purpose in life?”
Posted on | March 27, 2010 | 23 Comments
If you’ve ever wondered,
What is my purpose in life…
You’re not the only one.
It’s a pretty deep question that has been pondered by many.
Throughout my 20’s, I often asked – or screamed out in frustration – what is my purpose in life.
It’s the question that forces you to consider why you exist. That’s pretty hard core. It takes some real courage, honesty and fearlessness to find out.
Because it hurts when the answers don’t come, or when fear and doubt and broken dreams meet you along the way.
Take it from me. My parents and relatives were all so happy for me and proud when I graduated. Double degree in law and commerce from a top Australian university.
In their eyes, I was 22 years old, had a bright future and was on the path to becoming a successful young lawyer. I was happy, they were happy, everyone was happy.
I had all the certificates, but not the one that said, “Welcome to the Rat Race. Unless you’re willing to dig deep for answers, be prepared for a life-time without fulfillment.”
My parents didn’t warn me about that. As refugees who struggled tremendously to give me opportunity, their dream was that I would be well-educated and enter a high-paying, stable, well-respected profession. Their dreams came true.
Whilst their need for security was met, my strong desires for adventure, variety, diversity and challenge were being slowly buried.
By deadly routine.
An office with no windows.
And the lack of satisfactory answers in my work environment to the questions of my ferociously curious mind.
The carrot of a certain pay cheque each fortnight, kept my bum on the seat. Head down. Doing the work. All the while, I was dealing with a conflict between my need for secure income and my need for uncertainty in life.
For a couple of years, I kept my spirit quiet to make it through the days. Eventually, it started to cause me trouble just to get my attention again.
It whispered: There’s got to to be more to life.
It nagged: Your new path involves taking the leap, but you need to break through your fears.
It begged: Make the time to discover what is my purpose in life.
No, it didn’t help that I was relying too much on my logical mind. I had to move in the direction of my dreams, by doing what made me feel good.
This included taking a year off work to travel, doing some interesting short courses (that didn’t involve further formal, academic study) and connecting with like-minded people.
Without the self-pressure to find the answers, they eventually came.
Reading inspiring books. Talking to inspiring people. Finding inspiration from within me, instead of outside of me. Doing these things helped too.
Still, at the ripe age of 32 (soon), I don’t know exactly what is my purpose in life. But now that I’ve let go of some fears and my own stuff, I have a much better idea.
The choices along the way have been tough. Painful at times, but I’ve come out of it a lot happier.
Have you ever asked this question? Any answers? What helped you to discover your life’s purpose?
A special thanks to Tim Costello for his inspiring speech to the Sydney University Medical School on 16 March 2010 about Aid and Its Effectiveness. You got me thinking about how I can make a difference in this world and what is my purpose in life.

Et tu, Lina? I have been where you are, and delighted to read your words ‘ferociously curious’. Are we related? I’ve finally got to the stage of acknowledging that my curiosity is one of the pistons of my driving forces in life, and am learning to refine how I steer them. Maybe we should ask someone on their deathbed? It’s just occurred to me that maybe none of us know the whole story till it is finished. Hmmm. Let me know when you have an answer for this one.

Hi Jo – Thanks for commenting even though some difficult questions were raised there. I acknowledge you for that. I’m determined to discover what is my life purpose well before I reach my deathbed. I’m getting closer and closer to finding out, at least in general terms. Thanks for being a part of it all and for being an amazing person, Jo. What a pleasure to have crossed paths with you. Um, don’t think we’re related by blood! Unless you’re Asian? But definitely bonded in many ways.

Many times! Right now it’s raising my boys to be great men. There’s lots I need to teach them. I know they’ll be asking themselves that question one day. Hopefully I do a good enough job that they are able to answer it.

Hi Lina,
This is a question that I have been asking myself for some time now, more in recent times than ever.
That carrot and the security it brings is exactly what is keeping me in my seat. The fear of the unknown is the ball and chain that I have not been able to break-fee from.
Keep up with these articles Lina, they are both inspirational and motivational.

Hi Kim – You’re doing a fantastic job, Kim. The world is a better place because you’re a mother.
Hi Cemil – The shackles you describe keep people from discovering “what is my purpose in life.” The thing is, you probably have more security than you think you do right now. Take it one step at a time. Do things to build your confidence. Just don’t give up on your dreams

Hi Lina,
It’s always good to sit back and reflect on the pivot points in your life. I’ve always been an optimistic person. Two books (about 10 years apart) changed my life. The first was ‘Jobs that don’t suck’ – that taught me that you need to ask for things and be confident.
The second book was by an Australian entrepreneur. By chance I picked it up from the library. It opened my eyes to how the financial side of the World really worked. Great book. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the entrepreneur’s affiliate network and customer service.
Did you read a book that changed your life?

Great read Lina – it’s a subject we can all relate to in some way. We’re a complicated species who put up so many barriers and obstacles in our path through life that often results in us not knowing what our purpose in life is. If only we could make decisions more easily, grab opportunities when they arise and trust our intuition more and not let our emotions get in the way, then I believe our purpose would reveal itself more easily.

Hi Lina
Now having had the great privilege of meeting you Lina I can confirm that you are indeed a deep thinker, and very courageous. When you are courageous, you are really living.
It was when the desire to live my own truth rose up within me that I felt instantly ‘alive’, charged with excitement and enthusiasm. It took many ‘hill climbs’ in my life until I got to a mountain and could see that all the events that happened in my life until now weren’t always my decision but in retrospect were always the right decisions!. My purpose in life is to have no regrets and to always listen to my gut feelings. Whoever, or whatever force is in control, I say YES!I can handle it! even when I feel afraid. That is my only philosophy. Now lets be the role model for those who want to do the same.

Hi Lina – another great article. You know, I think it might be a boring old world if we all discovered what our purpose in life was at an early age. We are all different – and our experiences and adventures might help guide and inspire us towards a certain purpose. But if they haven’t yet, I wouldn’t be too concerned. Just love what you’re doing and enjoy the ride. I think you’re already doing that! Jan

Hi Lina, good on you for following what your heart had to say, and going against the ordinary deal that most in society seem to take (ie working for someone else). Many spend a life time working in a job they hate just to pay the bills.
Even if you can’t answer the question ‘what is my purpose in life?’ just yet, you seem to have given yourself the space and opportunity to discover this. Instead, you can spend a life time exploring. Bon voyage!

Lina,
Awesome words from an amazing person on a topic very close to my heart. What a privilige it is to have you and your blog in my life.
Helping people to let go of the ’should’s’ ‘must’s’ ‘have to’s’ and embracing the ‘want to’s’ is how I spend a great deal of my time as a coach. You have shown us through your personal leadership the way to do it.
We each have a calling, a fire in our belly, a whisper in our ear that is guiding us towards what we really want in life. Kids have no problem listening to it and acting on it, it is as we grow and are conditioned to be ‘dancers’ (as Wayne Dyer says) by our environment that we let our calling slip away and begin to call it ‘a dream that we had as a child’.
Thanks for showing us all how to listen to our calling, re-light the fire in our belly, and go after what we want in life.
Enjoy NYC!!

Hi Lina,
as I guess most people I have asked that question many times. Sometimes I thought I had an answer, but most times I didn’t. And the question keeps on coming back. None of the exercises I did to figure it out has done the trick yet, even so they might have brought me a little bit closer.
In case you come up with an answer for yourself – let me know, I would love to learn how someone else answers that question.

Inspiring blog entry Lina. I remember working our my Life Purpose and how excited I was to discover and define it in words that made sense. I achieve it everyday and it really motivates me too. I been achieving my Life’s Purpose since 2007 when I finally nutted it out. It’s funny how all my life experiences, good and bad, contributed equally to what I found was my Purpose. It seems like all the dead ends were necessary after all. It made so much sense. It was soooooo worth the effort to put it down in words and get conscious of this Purpose. I believe we all have it, just some people are more clear on what it is. Those that make the effort to get clear about their Life’s Purpose, will get rewarded massively. Because as soon as you know, everything seems to conspire to deliver. It’s just amazing.

Hi Castaly!
Wow, what a comment! Your energy is just jumping from the page and I love it. You’re in the minority Castaly, having worked out your purpose. Congratulations for that, but more importantly, for actually taking the time and asking the tough questions to find out. You deserve all your current success, and more. Looking forward to learning more about you.

Hi Lina,
I’ve definitely asked myself “what is my purpose?”
And part of answering this question lead me to completing a specific coach training to help me find my (and other people’s) purpose.
Have a look at http://www.knowyourpurpose.com, get the e-zine, and maybe some insights into finding purpose.
Happy to talk more about this if your interested.

Thanks Daniel!
Glad to see someone else has asked this question… And then actually done something about it. In your case, you then used your own journey to help others. Good on you and all the best with your coaching. Let me know how it’s going.

Hi Lina,
My sister said this to me today, maybe a quote from somewhere? I thought of the paths that you and I are following. “Almost anybody can tell you what their dreams are: to be this, to do that, to have that. Not everyone however is sincerely prepared to be rejected or to fail for their dreams. Funnily enough, it’s always those who are prepared to fail for their dreams, prepared to be knocked down and prepared to get back up who end up living the life they dream of”. I liked it, I thought you would to. John P

Hi John
Thanks for stopping by. Nice quote. Fears cripple people, John. The fear of broken dreams, broken hearts, sore egos… Enough to make most people play it safe their whole lives. I’ve learnt just to say, “F**k it, I’m going for it anyway”. Best way to learn and grow. Now I know what keeps you going, Mr Determination
. I do disagree with one part of the quote – I wouldn’t say “almost anybody” can tell you what their dreams are. A lot of people can’t even tell you that much. So sad, but true.

Hi Lina, You’ll like this. My advice always take notice of the “signs”. As I do working late into the early morning continuing to strategise on how exactly I’m too motivate my “customers”, local business clients I am dealing with etc. Love to work at this time with a bit of noise in the background – had the ABC late movie on – “Sinbad the Sailor”,In a scene he is addressing a complacent crowd in the marketplace trying to recruit for his ship. He proclaims.
VOICES OF THE STRONG, WHERE ARE YOU?
(This movie was 1953- great huh!)

Great entry Lina. It took me awhile to find out my purpose in life.. but after many years of soul searching… I know that my purpose in life is to serve God. Everything I do is for Him and in return He has showered me with blessings. Life is so much more clearer and much more meaningful. One of my ultimate favourite books is by Rick Warren “The Purpose Driven Life”… Great read and this book has helped me understand my purpose.
